2-3 Final Project: Milestone One: Proposal for Reclassification of Deviance Project Rosie Ballesteros Sociology, Southern New Hampshire University Soc-326: Social Psychology Dr. Sandra Call September 12, 2025 Society using illegal drugs as an escape The topic that I have chosen to investigate is the use of illegal drugs in the U.S. I would like to research why the U.S has the biggest drug market in the world for illegal drugs. Society is oblivious to why people seek the use of illegal drugs. This topic draws my attention because it can very well connect to mental health, people’s values and where society sometimes questions their worth in life leading them to the use of illegal drugs. Society is always quick to judge a drug user as having deviant or criminal behavior when in reality they do not know the cause of it. I want to be able to understand why many Americans rely on illegal drugs and if deviance is the correct way to define those individuals. Frequently society labels drug users as being deviant, but what they do not realize is that users sometimes feel that they have no emotional support. I know people that use illegal drugs, but it does not cross their minds that they are being defiant of the law. They seek drugs for medical reasons like pain relief or to escape from reality as the environment they may live in can be toxic or overwhelming. When society brands the use of drugs as a criminal act, they tend to forget what the root of the problem is, forget to listen and treat people with empathy and reasoning. My thesis is: the use of illegal drugs should not be immediately labeled as being deviant as the behavior may be clearly led by a psychological imbalance that is rooted in American society. This research will cover the connection between the use of drugs and mental health, emotional, and stress disorders. Helping people by conveying the focal point away from disciplining the individual and learning how to give them support and assistance.
