Academics
Students fortunate enough to attend Southwestern Christian College receive a strong academic and spiritual education. As an institution sponsored by Churches of Christ, the college aims to shape students into moral leaders and produce graduates with Christian character. Academically, undergraduates here have the option to pursue a two-year associate degree in liberal arts or a four-year bachelor’s degree in Bible and Religious Education. Although SwCC only offers those two degrees, each is part of a well-rounded, holistic education that includes English, history, math, natural science, physical education, foreign language, speech, and computer science. Classes that satisfy those requirements range from audio engineering to principles of accounting. SwCC gives every student the support they need to succeed. Indeed, through the Center for Student Success, everyone is eligible for free tutoring. Undergrads can take advantage of designated weekly sessions or schedule one-on-one help if needed. Additionally, the college provides personal and career counseling. It also hosts numerous workshops to help individuals hone their study skills, time management, test-taking strategies, and more.
Career
At SwCC, there’s plenty to take advantage of beyond the classroom. To begin with, undergrads can participate in a handful of extracurricular clubs such as the Student Senate, debate team, and Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society. Undergrads may also join several Greek organizations on campus. These groups host social events like banquets and class trips throughout the academic year. Prospective students interested in journalism will be delighted to learn that the college publishes a weekly, student-run newspaper, Ram Beat. Of course, athletics are also quite popular. The college is a Division I member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Students have the opportunity to participate in basketball, track, and women’s volleyball. Moreover, music is a big part of campus life as well. The college’s a cappella chorus always draws a big crowd. And certainly, students are active in the church. Indeed, all full-time undergraduates at Southwestern Christian must attend a brief worship every morning. Additional services, prayer meetings, and Bible studies are available for students who want to further their spiritual growth. Finally, when undergrads here need a break from the hustle and bustle of campus life, they can easily explore all that the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area has to offer.
Culture
Earning a degree from Southwestern Christian College lays the foundation for a successful future. A handful of those gaining associate degrees often choose to continue their education, pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree. Given the school’s religious focus, many students opt to find work within the church. A number of alumni have gone on to become pastors and youth ministers, or to oversee church choirs.
