Types of Transportation Available to Campus
In Boston, the primary mode of public transportation is the T (short for MBTA). The T system includes five color-coded subway/trolley transit lines: Green, Red, Orange, Silver and Blue. In addition to the subway/trolley lines, the T also runs a bus and commuter train service. Suffolk University is located within close walking distance to the Green and Red lines at Park Street, the Green and Blue lines at Government Center, and the Orange line at Downtown Crossing. If you would like to use public transportation and would like more information on destinations, please call the MBTA Information Service at (617) 722-3200, Monday-Friday, 6:30am-11pm; Saturday-Sunday, 9am-5pm. This past academic year, the Office of Undergraduate Admission enrolled 1,240 students in the freshman class and 345 transfer students. You may be considered for enrollment beginning in either December or February. The admission process is competitive. Our students have diverse backgrounds, interests, and talents; they all demonstrate academic achievement.
To be considered for admission, you must submit an application, a $50 application fee, official transcripts sent directly from your school and/or previous college, your SAT or ACT score, an essay, and a letter of recommendation.
Bachelor of Fine Arts applicants should note our portfolio requirement.
Transfer applicants should note additional requirements.
International applicants (non-residents or permanent residents of the US) should see the additional requirements listed at suffolk.edu/international.
We'll review your application file once the Office of Undergraduate Admission has received all necessary information and documentation. Upon admission, you have until May 1 or two weeks from receipt of your acceptance letter to confirm your decision to enroll at Suffolk.
We offer freshman applicants the opportunity to be considered for early action admission. The early action deadline is November 15. Decisions are made and candidates are notified by December 15. If you are not offered early admission, you still may be considered for admission through the regular decision process.

Suffolk University in downtown Boston offers a “very interactive and hands-on” academic experience accompanied by all the benefits of big city life. Incoming freshmen can choose from more than sixty programs of study and complete a set of core curriculum. Luckily, these “Gen Ed’s aren’t boring, they are tailored to specific majors and have fun ways of teaching projects.” While some undergrads think “final projects are difficult and put you out of your comfort zone,” many feel the “small classroom experience” and professors who “demonstrate and explain the content well” helps them feel confident in their mastery over the content. Overall, students say their professors are “genuinely impactful” and “truly care about their students.” If one of their methods isn’t quite working, undergrads aren’t afraid to speak up, as they know their instructors “are always looking to improve.” In addition to the network built in the classroom with professors and “a lot of speakers in the fields and industries that [students] are studying,” the urban campus allows “for greater job and internship opportunities that you may not be able to find anywhere else.” Many appreciate this web of resources and feel they are well-qualified for the “many opportunities for students looking to work in the city after graduation.”

Throughout the history of Suffolk University, it has been our policy to encourage and foster education for students of limited means.
Our commitment to keeping higher education affordable is apparent in the University's policy of maintaining tuition costs substantially below those of other private institutions of higher learning in New England. Even so, the cost of higher education represents a significant financial burden for many families. In an attempt to help alleviate this burden, there are four sources of financial aid available at Suffolk: the federal government, the state government, the University, and private sources.
Federal programs include grants, low-interest loans, and employment programs. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts awards loans and grants to state residents who demonstrate financial need. The University and private agencies/organizations award scholarships, grants, and loans to students in need.
Financial aid awards are made to help students finance their educational costs when their personal and family resources are not sufficient. Hence, most funding is awarded on the basis of demonstrated need. Merit-based funding is also available through select programs. We encourage students to apply for admission before March 1 to be considered for merit-based awards.
All undergraduate students are considered for merit awards. GPAs, standardized test results, and courses taken are the primary factors for consideration of merit-based awards.
Any undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in a degree or certificate program for at least six credit hours may apply for financial aid consideration (Undergraduate students enrolled in only three credits per semester may apply for a Federal Pell Grant.). Most awards are limited to students enrolled full-time. A student must also be in good academic standing, make satisfactory academic progress, not have defaulted on previous education loans, and, if required, be registered with Selective Service.
International students are not eligible for all forms of federal/state aid. They are, however, considered for numerous institutionally funded merit-based grant and employment programs at the time of admission.

Suffolk University is “full of very creative and intelligent people,” who are known to be “very adventurous” when it comes to exploring the city around them. At Suffolk, you can expect to meet individuals from “all different walks of life with many different experiences” and a “great mix of economic backgrounds.” Many find that “most students are friendly” and “try to listen [to] and respect one another.” Peers bond by trying “to be as active and united as possible through various events, be it online or on campus.” And despite its nontraditional campus, “still have a level of school spirit.” With undergrads coming from so many backgrounds, there are “more chances for networking,” which fosters a general sense of community, with one enrollee commenting, “[Suffolk students] want everyone in their class to succeed, not just themselves.”

Campus Facilities & Equipment
The University offers many facilities for students, including three libraries, two theatres, an in-house digital TV studio, and some of the best on-campus housing in Boston. The Leonard J. Samia Academic Center features general-use and science classrooms, a light-filled dining hall/event space, and indoor and outdoor lounge areas. Many campus buildings have enjoyed extensive, stylish renovations. We completely reimagined our art and design spaces as well. The Smith Fitness Center offers 5,800 square-feet of equipment. Entire floors of other buildings have been colorfully updated to offer more student gathering spaces and streamlined service centers. And the University's athletics fields and complex serves as home base for our baseball, soccer, and softball teams.
Off-Campus Opportunities
Boston is an integral part of Suffolk's identity, but it's not the University's only home. You have a world of opportunities to choose from, including the chance to spend a semester or even up to two full years at our international campus in Madrid, Spain. In fact, Suffolk is one of the only schools in the country that allows you to spend your first two years of college abroad before returning to the US to finish your degree. And if you major in international relations, you can complete all four years of your Suffolk education in Madrid.

One of Suffolk’s greatest selling points is that it’s located “in the heart of Boston.” Many rave about the “great places to eat” and “museums to sight-see.” Plus, university-offered perks like “discounted sports tickets” provide the student body with ample opportunity for off-campus entertainment. Some say that “Without a real campus, they are thrown directly into the city full of strangers and real working people.” While this can make it “more difficult to make…friends,” most find it to be “a great environment despite the unique campus set-up.” That doesn’t mean school-sponsored activities are lacking. In fact, “students are very involved with student groups and clubs.” Greek life is popular, with one student crediting her sorority with providing her with a sense of “having a community on campus.” The Queer Student Union is a “small comfortable community,” and the Asian American Association is widely recognized as a “safe place for all students to learn more about culture.” The school “excels at being actively inclusive,” making a point to “[pay] attention to the voice of what the students want.” When it comes to social justice issues, the school makes sure to “clarify their stance” while “[explaining] how they value equal rights.”

Sustainability
Suffolk University is home to a robust sustainability program, which includes a combination of high visibility and behind-the-scenes initiatives. Academically, this urban university offers approximately eighty classes that pertain to environmental topics in subjects such as environmental studies, environmental science and engineering, interior design, law, government, and public administration. Workshops at new student and employee orientations help raise awareness about campus environmental initiatives. The University, which has an award-winning recycling program, is striving to recycle at least half of its waste stream. Waste reduction is a high priority. Each year during move-out, students living in residence halls are encouraged to donate items such as books, clothes, and unopened food. This waste reduction initiative lightens the load for students, reduces trash hauling needs for the university, and benefits area non-profits. The on-campus cafes and bookstores offer incentives for customers who reduce waste, for instance, by using a travel mug or a reusable bag. Water bottle filling stations recently installed in several buildings are a popular amenity. They make it fast and easy to fill up reusable bottles with filtered tap water, and have already helped to avoid the use of thousands of disposable water bottles. In addition to waste reduction, the university has recently invested in receptacles that include sections for waste, mixed recycling, and composting, enabling café diners to recycle. The university also substantially increases its composting activity each successive academic year. Currently, the university is composting more than 80 tons of food scraps annually. The university has committed to achieving LEED Silver or higher for new building projects and major renovations. LEED-certified buildings on campus include the 10 West Residence Hall (Gold) and Modern Theatre (Silver).
