Career Experience
I worked as a graduate teaching assistant (TA) for chemistry during my pre-doctoral years. Since graduation, I have worked as a visiting assistant professor and as an assistant professor of chemistry and chemical education. Overall, I have 12 years of teaching experience in general and introductory chemistry courses as well as advanced chemistry courses (primarily in Analytical Division). These past 12 years have made me aware of many chemistry concepts that students typically struggle with, thus, giving me the opportunity to devise unique strategies to help them overcome those stumbling points.
I Love Tutoring Because
...of the self-satisfaction I gain from it. It provides me the opportunity to contribute to the personal and professional development of an individual. Teaching comes with a great responsibility and comprises both challenges and rewards. In my opinion, working together with students to boost their confidence in problem solving and concept mastering skills is one of the best accomplishments an educator can achieve. It is needless to say that many students find chemistry to be a challenging subject. Based on my teaching experiences over the past years, this may be due to the abstract nature of chemistry itself, the accompanying math, or simply the popular belief that ‘chemistry is hard’. For many students, understanding the logic behind solving a problem is the most challenging aspect of learning chemistry. Once that is understood, applying the relevant mathematical formula is not that challenging. Based on my experience, many students do have a hunch or an inkling about solving a given problem but are doubtful or hesitant to follow that hunch. When there is a tutor available to affirm or supplement the student’s idea, the student will develop confidence in solving the given problem and others alike. I always try to accommodate real-world examples and applications of chemistry where relevant. I continuously ask my students to find examples of chemical principles at play in their day-to-day lives. Sometimes I incorporate popular culture examples and ongoing discussions in society to further enhance the relevance of the concepts discussed. This approach helps in pointing out how chemistry is an integral part of our daily lives.
